Latin Roots & Affixes, Lesson 5

Today’s lesson will focus on the prefixes ante-, circum-, geo-, mono-, and pater-, as well as the roots –cide-, -ject-, and –pend- .

PREFIXES

The prefix ante means “before”. For example, antebellum means before the war. Another example is anterior.

The prefix circum means “around”. For example, the circumference is the distance around a circle.

The prefix geo means “earth”. You have probably recognized it in the words geography and geology.

The prefix mono means “one”. It is used in such words as monopoly and monogamy.

The prefix pater means “father”. So, your paternal grandfather is your father’s father.

ROOTS

The root cide means “kill”. For example, suicide means to kill oneself.

The root ject means “throw”. This root appears in words such as eject, inject, project, and subject.

The root pend means “hang”. You have seen it in the words depend and append.

Exercise

Instructions: Using what you know about these roots and affixes and the context, determine the meaning of the following bold-faced words.

  2. Magellan circumnavigated😄 You know what a navy does, right? the globe.
  3. The mentally disturbed youth was found guilty of patricide😄 You probably know the words "suicide" and "homocide".. The boy’s father will be buried at the Green Hills Cemetery.
  4. Japanese remove their shoes in an anteroom😄 Think about where this room is located. called the genkan.
  5. Mr. Hyde submitted his application on time, but Dr. Jekyll rejected😄 What does re- in the word "return" mean? it.
  6. While it is true that the United Kingdom has a queen in Queen Elizabeth, it cannot be considered a monarchy😄 The root -arch- means leader or chief., and Elizabeth’s power is solely symbolic.
  7. A decision on the Acura TL’s new design is pending😄 Don't keep me hanging. Tell me the answer now., but it is anticipated that it will be approved.
  8. Will A-Rod be suspended😄 The drunk driver had his license suspended. for using steroids several years ago?
